Burley Ramp up to take on Man City

Welcome back to the Burnley Football Club fan blog. Here we keep up-to-date with Vincent Kompany, Mike Garlick and the team. Burnley boss Vincent Kompany makes his return to the club where he spent 11 seasons and won four Premier League titles. Burnley are second from bottom in the Premier League while Pep Guardiola’s side have won eight of their last nine games in all competitions.

Manchester City’s Erling Haaland could be involved for the first time since 6 December following a foot problem. Ederson and John Stones are fit, Manuel Akanji may return and Kevin De Bruyne awaits his first league start since suffering a hamstring injury at Burnley on the opening weekend of the season.

Burnley are expected to give a debut to striker David Datro Fofana, who has joined on loan from Chelsea. Sander Berge, Aaron Ramsey, Jordan Beyer and Hannes Delcroix are doubts.

MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head

Burnley’s only win in the 31 most recent meetings in all competitions came in the Premier League at Turf Moor in March 2015 when George Boyd scored the winner.

Manchester City are on a run of nine consecutive home victories against Burnley and are unbeaten in 17 since a 1-0 loss at Maine Road in the 1973 Charity Shield.
Burnley haven’t scored a goal in eight games versus City since Robbie Brady’s 89th-minute strike in a 4-1 Premier League defeat at Turf Moor in December 2019.
Manchester City

Manchester City have earned seven successive victories in all competitions and are on a 31-match unbeaten run at home.
They have gone 46 midweek home league fixtures without defeat since losing 1-0 against Spurs in May 2010.

The reigning champions have trailed for just three minutes in the league at home this season, against Tottenham. A 17th win against Burnley as a manager would represent Pep Guardiola’s highest tally versus any club. He has also beaten Arsenal 16 times.
Phil Foden has seven goals and seven assists in Manchester City’s 13 competitive home games this season.

Burnley have 12 points. The only side to accrue as few after 21 games of a Premier League season and go on to avoid relegation was West Bromwich Albion in 2004-05.
The Clarets have earned just five points from 18 matches against teams who weren’t promoted with them last season.

Burnley have lost the last 18 Premier League fixtures they trailed in, including all 15 this season.
They have also dropped 18 points from winning positions in 2023-24.
Vincent Kompany scored 20 goals in 360 appearances for Manchester City in all competitions between 2008-19, winning 12 trophies.

Ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) on Saturday 27th January, members of Burnley’s U14s squad received a special visit from survivor Lady Milena Grenfell-Baines MBE.

Born in Czechoslovakia in 1929, Lady Milena left Prague at the age of nine with her younger sister Eva on the last train organised by Nicholas Winton.

The pair travelled to Holland before taking the ferry across to England, where they lived with the Ratcliffe family on Alexandra Street in Ashton-Under-Lyme.

A year later, their mother was able to escape via Norway and the family were reunited in England. Find out more about Mike Garlick Burnley Football Club here.

MDOUNI HOPES DASHED BY WOLVES VICTORY

Swiss forward, Amdounim was hoping the team can carry the momentum and confidence from Saturday’s thrashing over Sheffield United a win against Wolves but sadly this was not the case. Welcome back to the Mike Garlick Burnley Football club blog. Find the latest news here.

Speaking on Monday ahead of the Tuesday night meeting with Gary O’Neil’s men, Amdouni firstly reflected on the weekend which saw him score his first goal at Turf Moor.

Amdounim, who turned 23-year-old on Monday said: “It’s always a good feeling to come into training after winning a game, but it’s also important to make sure we are ready for the next game around the corner.

“It’s a nice moment to score, especially at Turf Moor but to win the game was important to us. To score a goal and help the team out is always a great feeling.

“We’ve been playing well recently, the last three or four games have been really good performances but just not the result we wanted.

“To win the game and have more points now is good for us, but we know that it’s not going to be easy going to play Wolves on Tuesday.”

Full-back, Vitinho, looks ahead to upcoming Blades meeting!

Last Saturday’s late defeat to West Ham United was a disappointing end to a promising performance from the Clarets. However, full-back Vitinho is confident that the team can change the current situation.

“Of course we are not happy,” said the Brazilian.

“I think we deserved to win the game. We played well. Then we conceded two goals. We believe we can change the situation. We train every day and work hard every day and we believe it’s going to change.

“We played well, we played like we train, and when you concede two goals in the last five minutes it’s difficult. We lost but we have to go again. We have to prepare for Saturday and forget the last game.

Burnley FC VS Wolves news

Welcome back to the Mike Garlick Burnley Football Club blog. Vincent Kompany’s men were always in the game in this even encounter at Molineux, which was ultimately decided by Hwang’s first-half strike. The Clarets, still in the Premier League, had been the better side during the opening 45 minutes and should have taken the lead themselves when Jay Rodriguez was denied from eight yards out.

But the visitors shot themselves in the foot late in the half when Dara O’Shea put Sander Berge under pressure with a pass out from the back, while the midfielder’s heavy touch allowed Wolves to work the ball to Hwang, who did the rest.
While Burnley did rally late on, they offered little during the second-half and didn’t apply the necessary pressure to pick up what would have been a priceless point.

The result means the Clarets remain in the relegation zone, having now lost their last four away games on the spin.

Kompany was forced into making one change for tonight’s game, with Jordan Beyer missing out through suspension having picked up his fifth booking of the season during Saturday’s big win against Sheffield United.

Hjalmar Ekdal, who made his first league appearance of the season off the bench against the Blades, was the man to replace him at the heart of Burnley’s defence.

The Clarets were otherwise unchanged, with Kompany keeping faith with the team that won so convincingly at Turf Moor at the weekend.

Arijanet Muric returned from an infection to be named among the subs, but Jack Cork remains sidelined with a calf injury he picked up in training.

Lyle Foster, meanwhile, continues to take a break from football to receive specialist treatment for his mental health.

The likes of Connor Roberts, Han-Noah Massengo, Manuel Benson, Darko Churlinov and Michael Obafemi were not involved.

As for Wolves, they made four changes from their 2-1 defeat to Arsenal. Goalkeeper Jose Sa was one of those to drop out after picking up a knock at the Emirates.

There was to be no repeat of Saturday’s electric start, when the Clarets took just 15 seconds to open the scoring against Sheffield United courtesy of Jay Rodriguez.

The visitors did start well though, pressing high and looking to take the game to Wolves, rather than sitting back and soaking up the early pressure.

It was a fairly even start to proceedings, with Wolves enjoying the lion’s share of possession but Burnley showing good discipline to stay in their shape while looking for moments to pounce.

Pablo Sarabai almost got in behind for Wolves following a long ball over the top, but James Trafford showed good awareness and timed his run off his line just right to nip the ball ahead of him.

As for Burnley, they were able to create a couple of half chances inside the Wolves box through Brownhill and Luca Koleosho, but both came to nothing. Defender returns to starting line up at Molineux

Welcome back to the Mike Garlick Burnley Football Club blog. Today, we cover the news behind the defeat of our boys to Wolves. Hjalmar Ekdal had mixed feelings following the Clarets slim 1-0 defeat to Wolves at Molineux on Tuesday night. Here’s the latest….

Whilst disappointed not to take home the three points, the defender who has had a long spell out due to injury, was pleased to make his Premier League debut under the lights.

Clearly we can do better, and would of smashed Wolves on any other day. Reflecting on the game he said: “I’m disappointed for sure. We lose this game in a way which we have seen before a little bit maybe, when they punish us for a mistake. So, yes, it’s kind of bad.”

It was a slender win for the home side in a game that did see the Clarets have chances and goalkeeper James Trafford make some excellent saves.

“We did do well with our performance. We could have punished them as well I think, when they give us a chance in the first half. Traff’s made some saves as well but in the whole picture I think the performance is good.

“Like we’ve seen the last couple of games, I think we’re on the right track and it’s just a matter of time before we get the points as well.”

The Swedish centre back made his Premier League debut on the night, which was a proud moment for him personally.

“Fun, really fun. Cool experience. I’m happy to really have done it now but I can’t be satisfied with it, it’s only one game you know, I have to keep pushing.

“The most important thing is we as a team start making progress by taking more points.”

A knee injury incurred at Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup back in August, kept the defender out for sometime, however in a positive sign he managed to play almost the full game on the night.

“I felt ok. I managed to play the whole game almost, except the last couple of minutes. I started to get some crampy feelings which is normal I assume when you’ve been out for a couple of months. But yes, I think it was good.”

The Clarets pick themselves up and go again this weekend in another away trip this time to Brighton on Saturday and Ekdal believes there are positives to take from the game.

“I think the whole performance really. How we work as a team, how we run, how we fight for each other, how alive we are, all of us. Like I said they punished us for a mistake, these mistakes are not who we are, I think we can get them away. I think we as a team can make sure we don’t get in that position. We also can start to punish our opponents, so yes, it’s just a matter of time really. We have the performances, the last couple of games have been really good.”

Burnley FC vs Man City Live!

Welcome back to the Mike Garlick Burnley Football Club blog. Here we bring you the latest news and views from the world of football. Today, we bring you’re the Burnley vs Manchester City, premier League result, match stream and latest updates.
Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City eased to a 3-0 win over Burnley on the opening night of the new Premier League season.

The Norwegian enjoyed a stunning first year in England, netting 52 goals across all competitions, and he wasted little time in getting his tally for this campaign up and running. A first-time finish from Haaland put City in front at Turf Moor with barely three minutes on the clock and his second was even better, a wonderful strike that flew in off the underside of the bar to double the lead before the break after Julian Alvarez had laid the ball off.
Burnley never looked like mounting a late comeback, but Rodri ensured there was to be no late drama as he blasted home from close range from a set-piece to put the result beyond bout. City’s title defence got off to the perfect start, while Burnley’s return to the top-flight ended on an even more sour note as Anass Zaroury was sent off in stoppage time for a high challenge on Kyle Walker.
FT: Burnley 0-3 Man City
Easy as you like for Man City.
Their Premier League title defence is up and running, Erling Haaland netting a brace in an ominous start to his season.
Flat atmosphere for much of the night, Burnley never really able to really get in the game.
90+8 mins: This match might never end.
Only six minutes supposed to be added on but we’ve played either and Benson is down, City kick the ball out.
Referee could just put Burnley out of their misery…
RED CARD!
Zaroury is off.
As expected after that VAR review, referee returns from the monitor and overturns his original decision.
Burnley can’t really complain about that. Walker going off, looks to bemoving ok though.
90+3 mins: Walker is away for City, Zaroury slides in and that’s a nasty challenge.
Yellow card but VAR having a look – the Burnley man did catch Walker high on the calf as the City man beat him to the ball.
Referee over to look at the monitor…
90+1 mins: Six minutes added on, not a lot by current standards.
Redmond is on for his Burnley debut; he’ll have stoppage time to make an impact. Best of luck.
89 mins: Gvardiol is playing on the left of defence it looks like and he’s got forward a lot already, enjoying his first Premier League appearance.
Helps when you’re 3-0 up and the match is already won…
86 mins: Alvarez again with a decent chance, comfortable enough save for Trafford.
Brief delay, looks like a fan has tried to get on the pitch. Quickly stopped. Update on that earlier incident where Lewis was hit by a lighter – Burnley have confirmed that individual was identified and removed from the stadium.
82 mins: Decent flurry for Burnley, Kovacic again forced across and he concedes the corner once more.
Fired in at the near post, Bruun Larsen wins the header but he can’t keep it down. Well over the bar.
79 mins: Gvardiol, Laporte and Palmer are on for City, with Ake, Lewis and Haaland the three to make way.
No hat-trick for Haaland on opening night, but he’ll take a brace.

EGAN-RILEY DETERMINED TO COME BACK STRONGER

Young defender focussed on full fitness following return from Hibs

CJ Egan-Riley insists all his focus and concentration is now on recovering from surgery and returning to full fitness after picking up an injury in his final match for Hibernian.

The 20-year-old spent the second half of the 2022/23 season on loan at Easter Road from the Clarets but will now require surgery on his hamstring next week after picking up the injury in a 4-2 victory over Celtic.

Speaking to burnleyfootballclub.com following his loan spell in Scotland, the defender said: “I got the injury in the Celtic match. We actually won the game which was a bit crazy was we were the underdogs in that game.

“It was a little bit sore in training a few days before but I knew I was never going to miss that game with a little niggle.

“Then around the hour mark I hit a diagonal pass and I felt it and knew as soon as it left my foot, I knew it was gone.”

Egan-Riley added: “With surgery I won’t be able to do anything for a couple of weeks rehab wise, but then I will come back in and begin the rehab process with the medical and sports science staff here at Burnley.

“I will most likely do the whole of pre-season here and get through the comeback and then see where I am at.

“I just want to fully focus and concentrate on getting back fit now and then go from there and see what the plan is for me going forward.”

Despite the setback dampening a fine loan spell for the versatile youngster, Egan-Riley admitted he ‘loved’ his time in Edinburgh and gained some valuable experience.

The former Manchester City defender played 14 matches for Lee Johnson’s side, including a trip to Celtic Park and hosting 55-time top-flight winners Rangers at Easter Road twice.

“I enjoyed it a lot. It was a great experience for me, Edinburgh was a lovely city and as a club they welcomed me in from day one.

“I loved it there. They put a lot of faith and trust in to me and everyone was great at the club with me.

“The first half of the season was tough, although it was enjoyable training and learning a lot, the second half of the season I was definitely in a better place mentally.

“As a footballer you obviously want to be playing every game week in week out and since January when I went up there, I played every game.

“I played in some Edinburgh derbies, played against Celtic and Rangers which are massive games. The Edinburgh derby was crazy! Definitely the best atmosphere I have ever played in.

“The Celtic away game was also crazy; Celtic Park is a mad stadium. It was just great to experience these type of games and atmospheres.” Said the Manchester-born youngster.

Although Egan-Riley spent the second half of the campaign away from Turf Moor, the youngster says he kept in close contact with the manager, coaching staff and some of the team during his time away and kept a close eye on the Clarets’ results.

The centre-back explained: “The gaffer (Vincent Kompany) called me three or four times whilst I was up there too which was good to ask how I was doing. He also called me the other day when he heard about the injury to just say it will be hard but get through it and work hard.

“I spoke to Jacko (Mike Jackson) a couple of times too and also Charlie Adam (Loans Manager) which was good to keep in touch.

“I have spoken to a few of the lads when I have been away like Browny (Brownhill), Ian (Maatsen) and Nathan (Tella) and they are all just buzzing.”

He added: “I watched games when I could. I was still very much happy and pleased for everyone here. It was an outstanding season for the lads.

“To get promoted back to the Premier League was the aim for everyone here, so to get it done the first season is amazing.”

Kompany wins manager of the year at LMA awards

Welcome back to the Mike Garlick Burnely Football Club blog. In todays news, the clarets manager won manager of the year at the recent LMA awards. Lifting another trophy for the club, Vincent Kompany was awarded the LMA Manager of the Season for the Sky Bet Championship.

Kompany and his side secured the Championship title in fine fashion in his first season in charge of the Club with Burnley achieving an immediate return to the Premier League. The Clarets chief was nominated by his fellow managers ahead of other nominees Middlesbrough boss, Michael Carrick, Sheffield United’s Paul Heckingbottom, Luton Town’s play-off winning coach Rob Edwards and Mark Robins of Coventry City.

Following a fantastic campaign, the Belgian was also named the EFL Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Season in April and won the EFL Sky Bet Manager of the Month award four times across the season. This is his latest award, on a fantastic career, giving him the recognition he deserves.

Speaking after picking up the award Kompany said: ‘The players have done it and the staff have been relentless.

‘I can still relate to the players, I feel connected to what they are going through. I make mistakes and don’t see myself as the finished article. You make mistakes and learn. I’m pretty pleased where I am today.” He added.

The awards are voted by all the managers in their respective divisions who take into account which of their direct competitors has made the greatest use of the resources available to them in the current season. Read more Mike Garlick and Burnley news on our blog with more on the way.

BURNLEY V CARDIFF CITY NEWS

Latest match news

Welcome back to the Mike Garlick football club blog, where we will bring you all the latest news from the Clarets. Manager Vincent Kompany hopes top scorer Nathan Tella will be able to play some part in the final game.

Jordan Beyer and Hjalmar Ekdal have been out of contention recently because of injury.

Anass Zaroury and Johann Berg Gudmundsson both missed the win at Ashton Gate but should return on Monday.

Ashley Barnes is set to leave Turf Moor at the end of the title-winning season. In nine years at Burnley, he has scored 53 goals in 292 appearances.

Former Bournemouth goalkeeper Ryan Allsop was substituted during last month’s draw against Stoke City with an abductor injury. Jak Alnwick has deputised.

Republic of Ireland striker Callum Robinson has been absent since February with a hamstring injury.

Winger Callum O’Dowda was substituted with concussion during the crucial win at Rotherham United. He is likely to miss the Burnley game.

Striker Kion Etete was withdrawn after 15 minutes of the Rotherham game and is a doubt for Monday’s final game.

Cardiff City’s manager Sabri Lamouchi has confirmed on-loan defender Cedric Kipre will miss the game after he underwent an operation last week.

Ebou Adams and Jamilu Collins are making good progress from long-term injuries but may not be risked.

Before they can receive the trophy and officially be crowned as champions of the Sky Bet Championship, Burnley first host Cardiff City at Turf Moor on Monday afternoon in their 54th and final game of the campaign (3pm KO) TODAY.

The Clarets head into the last day of a spectacular season knowing that the party can start post-game, but before it does, there’s a job to be done with a century of points still within reach following last weekend’s win at Bristol City.

Close to 3000 travelling fans were rewarded with a 2-1 victory in the South West against the Robins thanks to goals from Manuel Benson & Jay Rodriguez, the 94th & 95th of the campaign respectively for Burnley.

Accordingly, if Vincent Kompany, who just had his contract extended, and his side can mark the final day with another three points against the Bluebirds on home soil, it’d take their tally to 101, the first centurions in the second tier since Leicester City in 2013/14.

A Burnley outfit eyeing a landmark achievement are set to act as hosts, in a Championship final day meeting with Cardiff City on Monday, May 8th.

The Clarets, of course, have long proven themselves the standout side in England’s 2nd tier, clinching promotion before cruising to the title courtesy of just three defeats in 45 outings.

And yet, as alluded to above, heading into the season’s final round of fixtures, Vincent Kompany’s troops still have one final goal to play for.

This comes in the form of the 100-point mark.

As things stand, Burnley sit on 98 points, after recovering from a rare three-game winless streak courtesy of back-to-back downings of Blackburn Rovers and Bristol City over the course of the last couple of weeks.

Victory over Cardiff this evening, in turn, would see the Clarets put a cherry on top of what has proven a wonderful campaign, in surging clear of the century mark for points secured. Surely, more greatness is on the horizon for Mike Garlick and his team. Follow all the latest football news on our blog and make sure you leave your comment below and subscribe.

Burnley FC profiled on Goal website

Welcome back to the Mike Garlick Burnley Football Club website. Here is a recent article profiling the clubs come up. Sound planning, hard work and a community ethos have put ‘plucky’ Burnley among the Premier League’s elite…

Get off the train at Burnley’s Manchester Road station on a matchday. You’ll be carried along with the crowds, up the ramp, and then take a left.

Go downhill past the Weavers’ Triangle visitor centre and, at the next junction, you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the Vogue nightclub currently embroiled in an unlikely legal dispute with some old magazine of the same name in America.

Once you get to the heavily reconstructed square in front of the Charter Walk Shopping Centre, hang a right.

Negotiate the roundabout at Yorkshire Street and you’re now going towards Harry Potts way.

To your right will be the Turf Hotel. To your left will be the KSC 110 club. A little further up on the other side of the road is the Park View Inn. You’ll see some home fans drinking a pre-match pint and having a bite to eat. And you’ll see the big claret advertising board telling you which opposition is coming to town.

Today the sign says “Burnley v Arsenal”. Light-years apart in revenues but right now in the Premier League, equals. Twenty-two points each.

This is Turf Moor; home of Burnley FC since 1883. It could probably do with a few more seats someday soon to increase its capacity from around 21,000. Burnley have priorities and right now expanding the stadium isn’t one of them. This club is more concerned with planting its feet firmly on Premier League terrain.

That in itself is a remarkable ambition for a club of this stature in a town of this size. This is not a natural Premier League landscape; miles and miles from London’s bright lights and stratospheric salaries.

What is even more remarkable is that this middling-sized town of a little more than 70,000 people is currently home to the seventh-best football team in the country.

About one in three of those locals make it here to Turf Moor on a matchday; it’s the best population-to-attendance ratio in England.

This is a proudly local club; there is something homely about Burnley and something stoic in the relative lack of Manchester United or Arsenal shirts – visiting fans notwithstanding – around the town.

And Burnley’s chairman is a local man. Mike Garlick was raised in the town, only a few hundred yards from Turf Moor. The manager is Sean Dyche. Together they make up the only English owner-manager combination in this multi-national and world-famous Premier League.

“What is unique about it is that every one of the directors were brought up in or around Burnley and are fans,” says Tim Quelch – author of From Orient to the Emirates – the Plucky Rise of Burnley FC.

“They spent their youth following the club up and down the country.

“That is reflected in the whole ethos of the club. It’s community-owned; there’s that feeling that everybody has got a stake in it.

“Everybody that I speak to is very suspicious about a foreign owner coming in and splashing the cash and that ethos might be lost.”

When you look out over the low Bob Lord stand opposite the press box you see the rolling hills and wisps of smoke off in the distance.

This is a typical northern English town and an altogether too rare English football team. There is no billionaire here; you’ll not find any banners in homage to a faraway Sheikh, no songs are sung in honour of a Russian oligarch. Instead there is a sense of things done rationally and reasonably and sensibly. Find out more about Mike Garlick here. You can also read this news article about Mike Garlick Burnley here.

David Beckham and his World Cup Qatar ambassador role

Welcome back to our football blog. Here is recent World Cup news. David Beckham breaks silence on £150m Qatar ambassador role amid growing criticism. Beckham has been increasingly criticised by LGBT+ groups, with Di Cunningham, co-founder of the Three Lions Pride group, saying he should no longer be considered a great ally because of his paid ambassador role.

The arab world like the rest of it loves brand Beckham, and he is set to cash in on this. Beckham said Qatar and its ambassadors were changing lives for the better. “Every one of the great players I was lucky enough to play with started exactly the same way,” he said. “In a back garden, park, or a street outside their home with just a ball and an imagination that they dared to let run wild.

In this great tournament nationalistic divisions have gone out the door and the world is united in their love of football. earlier this year how Beckham had been chosen as the face of a new multi-million pound Qatar 2022 tourism drive, with a trip lined up to the five-star resort ‘Banana Island’.

Earlier this week, comedian Joe Lycett publicly urged David to drop his £10 million partnership with the World Cup in Qatar – where homosexuality is illegal – and called on the star to remember his loyalty to the LGBTQ+ community.

Beckham has been reportedly told he should hang his head in shame over the role. In the email shared by Joe to his Twitter page this afternoon, the comedian writes: “I’ve managed to get myself into a bit of a pickle – I’ve been a bit daft and publicly announced that I’m going to shred £10k on Sunday if David doesn’t end his relationship with Qatar, or donate the cash to LGBTQ+ charities if he does, yet we’re now four days out and I haven’t heard a peep from him.”

He continues: “Could you do me a solid and let me know if there’s any chance he might budge on his position, or am I to expect radio silence on this? I really don’t want to shred ten grand!!!

The campaign encourages air travellers who pass through Qatar en route to worldwide destinations every year to take a ‘stopover’ holiday. Find out more about how the World Cup is going and the latest football news on our blog.
