Burnley victory at Stadium of Light

Welcome back to the Burnley FC football blog. Today we celebrate Burnley’s latest victory against Sunderland. Clarets are now third in the league and going from strength to strength. Vincent Kompany come to Wearside with a 12-match unbeaten run in the Championship, and stand in third place in the table following their 1-1 draw with Birmingham City in midweek.

In a memorable game of two halves, Burnley scored four unanswered second half goals to claim three points on the road in Sunderland with a 4-2 victory. The crowd cheered as they took back the match, and brought victory to the Clarets and their fans. In a recent interview, Tella commented on his 6th goal of the season:

“The way we play, anyone can score and luckily today it was me.

“Scoring with my head! Luke (McNally) said to me before the game today that I would score a header.

“But the way we played in the second half, is the way we know we need to play and the goals then came.”

Trailing 2-0 behind at the break, Burnley came out swinging at the restart and goals from Nathan Tella, Manuel Benson, Anass Zaroury & Josh Brownhill ensured over 2,000 travelling fans in the packed-out away end at the Stadium of Light would be sent home happy.

Vincent Kompany tweaked his side in two positions from Wednesday night’s 1-1 draw at Birmingham City. Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Burnley’s scorer in midweek, started in the North East while Ashley Barnes also made the 11.

We look forward to seeing them play the upcoming fixtures in the next couple of weeks, with the next match against Norwich, currently 7th, and Reading, currently 12th in the league. Burnley pay heartfelt tribute to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II

The nation is devastated after hearing the news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II. She embodied Britishness and made the country great. She is the longest reigning monarch, on the throne for 70 years. Mike Garlick and the team have yet to release statement, but Alan Pace has.

Burnley Football Club joins the country in mourning the death of Her Majesty The Queen who celebrated her Platinum Jubilee earlier this year visited Burnley three times during her reign.

The Queen and the late HRH Prince Philip made an official visit to Burnley Town Hall in 1955, then thirteen years later, the town welcomed Her Majesty again, passing by Turf Moor on her way to visit Burnley’s St Peter’s church.

In 2012, the Club were privileged to open the doors of Turf Moor to the Queen to enjoy lunch, before being greeted by the crowds that had gathered outside the stadium. She meant so much to so many people.

Chairman, Alan Pace said: “Burnley Football Club has been left deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty The Queen.”

He continued: “As a Club, we were honoured to host Her Majesty and Prince Philip at Turf Moor on their tour of the North West back in 2012, as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, and I am sure that for everyone that was present that day, the occasion will remain one of their fondest memories.

“Her Majesty dedicated her whole life to Great Britain and the Commonwealth, serving her country with pride and devotion. Her devout sense of duty was admirable and on behalf of the Club I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to the Royal Family at this difficult time.”

Burnley FC will join EFL Clubs in paying tribute to Queen Elizabeth II. The Club will provide further details surrounding this in due course.

Clarets news

Welcome to the Burnley Football Club blog. Find out more about Pace, Mike Garlick and new manager Kompany here. Six Clarets represented their native countries across Europe in June.

Nathan Collins, Nick Pope, Connor Roberts, Wayne Hennessey, Wout Weghorst and Bailey Peacock-Farrell have all been in action over the past couple of weeks on international duty.

Collins started all four of Ireland’s UEFA Nations League fixtures, also playing 90 minutes in all of the matches, coming up against Armenia, Scotland and Ukraine twice.

The 21-year-old defender gave Stephen Kenny’s side the lead in spectacular fashion on Tuesday night against Ukraine, before Dovbyk equalised for the hosts after the break.

Nick Pope was an unused substitute for Gareth Southgate’s England side across the break, as the Three Lions suffered defeat to Hungary twice and draws with Germany and Italy.

Welsh duo Roberts and Hennessey had five games scheduled over June, with the Burnley pair featuring in four of them, coming up against Belgium, Poland, Ukraine and Netherlands twice.

Both started the crucial 2022 World Cup Qualifier against Ukraine in Cardiff, where the Dragons ran out 1-0 winners, with Roberts grabbing an assist in the 2-1 defeat to the Netherlands the following week.

Striker Wout Weghorst was apart of Louis Van Gaal’s Holland side, with the forward only starting once out of the four matches, where the 29-year-old headed home a dramatic stoppage time winner against Wales in the UEFA Nations League.

Weghorst was an unused substitute against Belgium and in the second meeting with Wales in Rotterdam, with just playing the last 13 minutes against Poland. Find out more about the club and the latest news from Mike Garlick here.

Welcome back to the Clarets WordPress fan blog. Here we will cover the upcoming match against Brentford FC where both teams fight relegation and fight to stay in the premier league.

An important fixture in the Clarets survival bid, the crucial nature of it has grown further as other relegation rivals can build momentum in the later stages of the month as Burnley FC watch on.

Brentford will be aiming to build upon a fantastic win last time out against Norwich when they play host Mike Garlick’s Burnley. The Clarets sit third from bottom in the Premier League table as things stand but could move out of the relegation zone with a win on Saturday.
Burnley haven’t lost any of their last six matches against Brentford and claimed a 3-1 win at Turf Moor back in October, so you can start to see why we’re backing the visitors to secure at least a draw on Saturday. Brentford have lost four and drawn one of their last six matches in all competitions, while Burnley have won two and drawn one of their last five league games.
Five of the last seven league meetings between Brentford and Burnley have produced over 2.5 goals, and we’re predicting another action-packed 90-minutes this weekend. Over 2.5 goals have also been scored in three of the host’s last six matches and Brentford have only kept one clean sheet during that period. Burnley secured a 3-1 win against Brentford and have scored exactly three goals against the Bees in three of their last four encounters.

Tributes for great granddad (84) who ‘lived and breathed’ Burnley Football Club

A lifelong Clarets fan, who had a season ticket for 60 years, has died at the age of 84.

Lifelong Clarets fan Harry Stuttard has died at the age of 84

Mr Harry Stuttard was still attending home matches up until his sudden death on November 12th.

A well known face at the club, Harry had sat in the same seat at the Turf since the James Hargreaves stand became all seated.

His grandson Jack said: “My grandfather would never have given up his seat for anyone as he would say he had prime position in the stadium in the middle giving him the best view possible of the games.”

Paying tribute to him as a ‘lovely, gentle, likeable character with a great sense of humour’ Jack said his grandfather had his own little sayings about the Clarets, including describing them as ‘the best team in Burnley.’

And if he met a Blackburn Rovers fan he would always joke they could ‘get help for that.’

Jack added: “He basically lived and breathed BFC, seeing Burnley all through the highs and lows and he never stopped going to games even when they were at the lowest point.

“When Harry was in his 70’s he thought nothing of travelling to see Burnley at Wembley at the play offs.”

One of seven children, Harry attended Healy Wood Primary School in Burnley and the former Barden Secondary Modern. After completing two years National Service he worked at the former Bellings factory for around 20 years and a further 20 years at Prestige, until its closure.

Harry had been due to celebrate his 50th wedding anniversary with his wife Rita at the end of this month. He leaves his children Stephen and Vanessa, grandchildren, Dale, Abbie and Jack and great grandchild Harley.

Harry’s funeral will be held on Wednesday, November 24th, at Burnley Crematorium at 3-15pm and the cortege will pass Turf Moor. A wake will take place at Rosegrove Unity Club.

Leicester FC V Burnley FC

Welcome to the Burnley FC blog. Here is a run down of the recent match against Leicester. Jamie Vardy scored twice – as well as an own goal – as Leicester City came from behind to deny Burnley a first Premier League win of the season. Leicester had 63% posession and took 22 shots compared to Burnley’s 9. They also got more shots on target than Burnley.

Vardy rounded Clarets goalkeeper Nick Pope from substitute Kelechi Iheanacho’s through ball with five minutes remaining to complete an eventful afternoon for the in-form Foxes striker.

Burnley’s summer signing Maxwel Cornet had scored a stunning volley for the visitors late in the first half on his first league start since joining for £12.85m from Lyon in August, firing in emphatically from Matej Vydra’s cross.

Sean Dyche’s side took an early lead when Vardy inadvertently beat Kasper Schmeichel with a flicked header at his near post from Ashley Westwood’s corner.

However, the Foxes striker atoned for his error as he raced on to Youri Tielemans’ pass and found the bottom corner – before rescuing a late point with another calm finish.

Burnley boss Dyche, who was forced to replace the impressive Cornet because of injury at the end of the first half, thought his side had scored a dramatic injury-time winner only to see Chris Wood’s header ruled out for offside.

“That was a Jamie Vardy performance. He was a threat all game, he was superb,” said Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers.

“You are seeing his energy in the game, freshness, movement and work rate. He is a top, top striker. His movement for the goals was excellent, both were really good team goals but he makes the pass because of his movement.”

It proved an eventful opening 45 minutes for both Leicester’s Vardy and Burnley’s Cornet, though as has so often been the case for the Foxes it was Vardy who had the final say.

The 34-year-old missed a wonderful chance to put Leicester in front moments before his own goal when he headed Tielemans’ whipped cross over from close range.

Matt Lowton also produced a wonderful sliding challenge to prevent Vardy tapping in Ricardo Pereira’s ball across the six-yard box, as Burnley’s defence initially stood firm under pressure.

Tielemans was excellent in the Leicester midfield and a route back into the match for the hosts always appeared likely to come through him. The Belgian produced five key passes for his side, including a perfect ball to set Vardy clear for Leicester’s first.

For much of the second half Cornet’s memorable first Burnley goal looked set to give the Clarets their first win at the sixth attempt. Lifting the football standing ban

Welcome to our football fans blog. Plans to lift the ban on standing in the English Premier League and Championship are set to be announced by the government, the BBC has learned.

It is thought a handful of grounds will be able to use designated safe standing areas before the end of the season.

It would mean for the first time in over 25 years, fans of some top flight football clubs would be legally allowed to stand and watch their team play.

An official announcement is expected as soon as next month. The chairman of the Football Supporters Association, Malcolm Clarke, said it was a “welcome” development that would benefit all fans.

He added: “People who want to stand should be able to do so in safety. Those who want to sit should be able to do so without having their view blocked.”

Since 1994, first and second tier grounds in England and Wales have been required to be all-seaters by law.

However, thousands of supporters continue to stand throughout matches.

In their 2019 general election manifesto, the Conservatives promised to work towards the introduction of safe standing areas, which have been embraced in the German Bundesliga, as well as in Scotland – where around 3,000 Celtic fans have been allowed to make use of a safe standing section since 2016.

Now, the BBC understands ministers will instructs the regulator, the Sports Ground Safety Authority (SGSA), to choose “early adopters” for the trials.

And while they are keen to proceed with caution, if the initial trials prove successful, the expectation is legislation would be widened out to cover all stadiums in England’s top two divisions within the next few years.

A spokesperson for the Sports Ground Safety Authority said: “We are working closely with the government on planning the next steps for implementing this manifesto commitment.”

As a result, the relatives of the Hillsborough victims have had long-term concerns about standing in football grounds.

But Margaret Aspinall, whose son died as a result of Hillsborough, now accepts the arguments for a change in legislation.

She said: “People’s opinions have changed. You’ve got to move forward with the times.”

Mike Garlick: Burnley FC News

Welcome to the Mike Garlick Burnley FC News fan blog page. Burnley dropped from a pre-tax profit of £5 million in the 2018-19 financial year to break even for the past year. This is due primarily to a decrease in turnover from £138 million to £134 million which was due to an £8.5 million broadcast rebate and loss of matchday income.

Meanwhile, wages grew from £87 million to £94 million (adjusted to show a 12-month comparison). With the financial year extended a further month there was also a further £9 million in costs for the month of July 2020.To break even is impressive, considering Burnley’s wage to turnover ratio increased from 62.8 per cent to 70.2 per cent (adjusted for the 12-month period), the £8.5 million broadcaster rebate and £9 million in extra costs for the additional month.

Burnley saw an increase in prize money following their 10th-place finish, up from 15th the season before. They also spent prudently in the transfer market adding Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Jay Rodriguez, Erik Pieters, and Josh Brownhill permanently whilst Tom Heaton and Nakhi Wells left to offset the majority of that spending.

The accounting period ended before Burnley’s new owners, ALK Capital arrived at the club in December 2020. Breaking even again despite the Premier League halting between March and June shows that the previous ownership handled the initial effects of the COVID-19 pandemic well.

The club were once again prudent in their transfer business but with the new owners hoping to make more finances available to Sean Dyche in the summer and a significant loan taken out to help finance the takeover, it will be interesting to see how they look to take the club forward.

Burnley FC Women

Welcome to the Mike Garlick Burnley fan blog page. New chairman Alan Pace has vowed to back Burnley FC Women’s push to become a full-time professional outfit. The Managing Partner of ALK Capital pledged his full support following the announcement that the operation would be integrated into the football club with immediate effect.

Burnley FC Women and the wider youth operations will come under football club operations, with the aim of increasing the team’s presence, infrastructure, and investment. Major investment, including the creation of a Women’s Academy, is planned to move the women’s team to the next level, following unprecedented back-to-back promotions into the FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division; the third tier of women’s football.

The team will, in future, share the club’s Barnfield Training Centre facilities with their male counterparts and will seek new partners on an international scale, with the aim of improving every level of Burnley FC Women and its wider operations. Plans for a Women’s Academy also seek to provide a professional environment for young female players and establish Burnley as a hotbed for future talent in the women’s game.

Alan Pace, Chairman of Burnley FC, said: “The 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup was arguably a turning point for the women’s game, attracting new fans and inspiring men and women all over the world to see football in a new light.

“Over the coming seasons we will fully support and invest in our new women’s football strategy, with the ambition to gain promotion to the FA Women’s Championship within four years and ultimately become a full-time professional outfit.”

Nick Pope

Welcome to the Clarets Fan blog page. Nick Pope was in outstanding form for Burnley in their 1-0 win at Liverpool and Reds fans have hailed the Clarets goalkeeper’s performance. Pope made six saves as the Clarets prevailed late on at Anfield thanks to an Ashley Barnes penalty and, in doing so, became the first team to win in the Premier League at Anfield since Crystal Palace in April 2017.

It ended a 68-game unbeaten run for Jurgen Klopp’s side and Pope played a key role in ensuring his side secured a deserved win, with the defence in front of him also once again holding firm. His best save was to deny Reds substitute Mohamed Salah, who came on as a second-half substitute and tried to deceive Pope by showing to shoot in the far corner, only to whip it towards the near post but the Burnley No.1 made a stunning reflex stop.

He was commanding from set pieces and assured with his handling too and his performance left Liverpool fans making comparisons to Juventus and Italy goalkeeping great Gianluigi Buffon. Pope excelled in his side’s 1-1 draw in the corresponding fixture from last season and maintained his own personal good form at Anfield with another impressive showing.
