Burnley vs Manchester United

Welcome to the Clarets Fan blog page. Burnley will enter Tuesday’s contest in good form, having won three of their last four matches in all competitions, including a 1-0 victory over Sheffield United in their last league game on December 29.

The Clarets were in FA Cup action against MK Dons on Saturday, though, and needed penalties to overcome the League One outfit after a 1-1 draw; Burnley were actually heading for a surprise defeat on home soil, only for Matej Vydra to come up with a 94th-minute leveller, forcing extra time in the process.

The team have picked up 16 points from their 15 league matches this season to sit 16th in the table, five points clear of the relegation zone; they have won three of their last four Premier League fixtures at Turf Moor, meanwhile, overcoming Crystal Palace, Wolves and Sheffield United.

United, meanwhile, will enter Tuesday’s contest off the back of a 1-0 win over Watford in the FA Cup, with Scott McTominay’s early header sending the Red Devils into the fourth round of the competition.

Burnley are hopeful that Nick Pope can recover from an ankle injury in time for Tuesday’s contest, but Will Norris is on standby if the England international does not prove his fitness. Dwight McNeil also has a chance of returning from a groin problem, but Charlie Taylor, Jay Rodriguez and Kevin Long are all expected to remain absent for the Premier League clash.

Premier League Statement: Shareholders’ Meeting

Welcome to the Clarets Fan blog page. Burnley Football Club chairman Mike Garlick and CEO Neil Hart today joined a shareholders’ meeting of all 20 Premier League clubs.

We fully endorse and support the following statement, which has been issued by the Premier League following the meeting.

All 20 Premier League clubs today unanimously agreed that Project Big Picture will not be endorsed or pursued by the Premier League, or The FA.

Further, Premier League Shareholders agreed to work together as a 20-club collective on a strategic plan for the future structures and financing of English football, consulting with all stakeholders to ensure a vibrant, competitive and sustainable football pyramid.

Clubs will work collaboratively, in an open and transparent process, focusing on competition structure, calendar, governance and financial sustainability. This project has the full support of The FA and will include engagement with all relevant stakeholders including fans, Government and, of course, the EFL.

Also at today’s meeting it was agreed to make available a rescue package which aims to ensure that League One and League Two clubs will not go out of business as a result of the financial impact of COVID-19 and be able to complete the 2020/21 season.

League One and League Two clubs rely more heavily on matchday revenue and have fewer resources at their disposal than Championship or Premier League clubs and are therefore more at risk, especially at a time when fans are excluded from attending matches.

This offer will consist of grants and interest-free loans totalling a further £50 million on top of the £27.2m solidarity payments already advanced to League One and League Two this year, making a total of £77.2m.

Discussions will also continue with the EFL regarding Championship clubs’ financial needs. This addresses Government concerns about lower league clubs’ financial fragility.

Football is not the same without attending fans and the football economy is unsustainable without them. The Premier League and all our clubs remain committed to the safe return of fans as soon as possible.

Ben Mee on Burnley’s spirit

Welcome to the Clarets fan blog page. Burnley captain Ben Mee, the 31-year-old will step up for duty when the Clarets go hunting for their first league win. And after showing no ill effects in training on Wednesday, the skipper will book himself on the trip south to play Brighton on Friday evening.

Ben Mee, who had been sidelined by a thigh muscle tear also believes Burnley’s squad sufficient experience and belief to overcome their current predicament.

“It was good to be back and play the full game, but it’s all about the team and how we are going to go about things,” he told the club website.

“There is a long way to go, a lot of games to come and I’m excited to get involved.

“We need to improve our position, no doubt about it, and pick up points, but we’ve been in situations like this before and the togetherness of the squad is always there and the belief is there for sure.

“We’ve got plenty of work to do and there’s a long way to go but the confidence is coming back and we are looking forward to the challenge that’s ahead.

“There’s no panic. We know where we need to get to and what we need to work on.”

Sean Dyche Confident of Burnley Squad

Welcome to the Mike Garlick Burnley FC News fan blog page. The Clarets kick off their season against Sheffield United in the Carabao Cup at Turf Moor on Thursday evening with no new outfield additions to the squad so far.

Dyche is keen to boost his options with injuries and summer departures stretching resources. And with the visit of the Blades followed by a Premier League opener at Leicester City on Sunday night, it’s very much a case of quality not quantity in a squad that finished 10th in the top-flight last season.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche said: “I think we’ve got a very good group here. Although it’s low in numbers, we’ve still got some very good players here.

“We’ve still got Corky to get fit, Barnsey to get truly match fit and we’ve still got Ben Mee to get match-fit.

“They are very good players, who will come back into the fold.”

“I like the group we’ve got. Can we reinforce it, can we add to it, can we adjust it and mould it accordingly? That’s the next challenge.

“It’s a time-bound challenge with the closing of the window, but that’s the challenge and we have to keep doing it.”

With the Clarets’ opening squads likely to contain some of the U23 players that have been part of the senior set-up since football resumed following lockdown last season.

“Ben and Barnesy were probably the two we thought we might have now. We haven’t got them going into these couple of games, but they’re making good progress,” Dyche added.

“Barnesy is doing very well. It’s us, probably more than him (holding him back).

“We want to get some football matches into him, not just the training.”

Ben Mee, we are being a little bit cautious with. He had quite a high-level strain at the end of lockdown, so we are being a bit more cautious with him — and appropriately so.

“Corky is a slightly longer situation due to the nature of the operation he had, but that’s all going well. We felt he would miss this early part of the season.”

Mike Garlick: Leicester City VS Burnley

Welcome to the Mike Garlick Burnley FC News blog fan page. For all the Burnley supporters out there and football fans alike. Get involved by showing love on this channel and follow my posts about Burnley FC.

Two of the more defensively sound sides from last season entered into the spirit of the Gameweek 2 goal fest on Sunday evening, with Leicester City running out 4-2 winners over Burnley. While Burnley’s determination and desire was admirable, in the end, it proved no match for Leicester’s fluid attacking play and extra sharpness. The home side controlled the ball throughout with Barnes and Belgian midfielder Praet coming to the fore on the left of midfield.

Whether it was going directly up against Burnley right-back Phil Bardsley or moving intelligently into infield positions, Barnes’ movement and pace was a key ingredient of Leicester’s attacking play.
His placed effort to equalise was a show of composure as Burnley defenders reacted to Castagne’s cut-back. And he forced a wonderful save from Pope at the end of a teasing run in off the left wing that Bardsley could do little to prevent.

The England U21 international had more shots (five) than any other Leicester player but his final contribution of the evening was a significant one in another way, as he skipped away from three defenders to pick out Praet who did the rest with a sublime effort

What’s next? Burnley will be in EFL Cup action at Millwall on Wednesday 23 September (19:00 BST) prior to welcoming Southampton to Turf Moor in the Premier League on Saturday 26 September (20:00 BST)

Nick Pope Burnley FC Big Winner

Welcome to the Mike Garlick Burnley FC fan blog page. Burnley held an end of season awards on Sunday night and Nick Pope was the big winner as the goalkeeper scooped two honours. He was named as Burnley’s Player of the Year while also winning the Players’ Player of the Year prize.

Reflecting on the latter award when speaking to Lancashire Live, the 28-year-old said: “I don’t know if them lot know too much about football if they voted for me but I will take it! We have a good set of lads in the dressing room so to get their approval and get their vote means a lot to me.”

Pope on the season as a whole

“Looking back on the whole season I am really happy with how it went and on top of that you get the team’s achievements as well and it has been an all-round good package.”

“We look forward to next season now, it will come around quick and you can’t dwell on it too long but it is nice to look back on a few achievements and some positives and we have to take that into next season now.”

Despite what Pope might say, he was a deserving recipient of both awards considering how brilliantly he played last season.

Mike Garlick: Charity News

Welcome to the Mike Garlick Burnley fan blog page. Sports stars and clubs across the world continue to help their local communities and find new ways to amuse themselves during the coronavirus pandemic. Burnley FC is marking the reopening of their official store with a sale of branded face masks, with 100% of proceeds going to the club’s charity.

The staff at Turf Moor shop are relieved to be welcoming supporters back following the coronavirus lockdown and hope that the mask sale will help fund the vital work that Burnley FC in the Community has been doing throughout this period.

The mask is priced at £8 and will allow fans to show their support while protecting themselves from the virus as lockdown continues to ease. Since the beginning lockdown the club’s charity has distributed 1,875 food parcels which have fed 4,200 people of which 1,633 have been children and has also provided over 500 welfare calls to vulnerable members of the community.

The club hopes that sales of face masks will help continue to fund efforts like these as the community comes to face the post pandemic landscape.

The Burnley FC fairytale

Here is a new blog from Daniel Harris, a Burnley Football Club superfan. Get involved by showing love on my channel and following my posts about Burnley FC. In today’s blog, Daniel shares how Burnley FC defied the odds to join the elite.

Burnley FC is one of the truly inspirational stories of the Premier League. Currently sitting 10th in the league table while the football world waits for the coronavirus to pass, the Clarets are a model for true steady growth. While they haven’t burst to the top like Leicester City has, the club is still a fascinating story.

mike garlick burnley news

While the history of the club is a story in and of itself, the Clarets are also currently a club to study, with both a chairman and manager who present positive ideals and embody the identity of the club itself. The club is truly local from the top down. And they don’t take anything for granted, not even the recent success and growth. When asked what it means to be established in the Premier League, Chairman Mike Garlick Bunrley said, “No such thing.” They are aware of the season-to-season volatility and the possibility that at any moment all the years of building could be torn down with one bad stretch of games. That’s truly the club of the working class.

To rock bottom and back up: Burnley FC nearly didn’t make it out of the 1987 season alive. A founding member of the Football League in 1888, Burnley was relegated to the Fourth Division for the first time in club history in 1985, having suffered five relegations in a fifteen-year span. With newly-introduced promotion and relegation from the semi-pro ranks and the professional levels, it was thought that dropping out of the Fourth Division and into the Football Conference could be devastating for a club to the point where it could cause some to dissolve. With that in mind, after a horrid season that saw the club knocked out of both Cup competitions in the first round, only victory over Leyton Orient on the final day of the campaign plus a loss by Lincoln City saved the club from dropping out of the professional ranks altogether. Read Chairman Mike Garlick Burnley reflects on a positive financial year for the Clarets and looks ahead to the near future of the club here.

That game lives in club lore, as does support of the fanbase around that famous day. The listed attendance for the game is over 15,000 fans at Turf Moor, nearly 5,000 more than any other game that season and only the second time the club recorded a five-digit attendance figure for any league game. After five more seasons in the Fourth Division, they would win the league and earn a promotion that would set off a period of growth still being experienced today.
